The sandstone and conglomerate are interbedded with shale and limestone, and are locally associated with tuffaceous rocks, gypsum, and coal. Limestone, sandstone, shale, conglomerate and schist also occur in the Pei-Shan and Nan Shan mountains in the extreme west, and in the Tsinling Shan mountains on the southwest margin of the region.
